“Cheerful pansies are on the way!  These brightly colored annuals are the perfect way to start the container gardens off right and to bring a bright touch to the front of an otherwise drab early spring landscape.  Pansies will add color long before even the daffodils have a chance to open, before the cherries and pears blossom out, and before the perennials can have any impact.  Hellebores are an exotic and underused perennial that can be the first woodland plants to bloom in March.  This year we are happy to offer Helleborus foetidus…yup, in Latin, that means “stinking Lenten rose’.  But the nodding chartreuse bells tinged with maroon are only funky up close…no reason not to benefit from their beauty.  Hellebores also come in shades of rose, purple and cream.

We also have a great selection of seeds from Botanical Interests (www.botanicalinterests.com) and Renee’s Seeds (www.reneesgarden.com ).  Speaking of plants that are cold-tolerant, why not start some mesclun mix for a kitchen garden in a pot by the back door, or get some peas going.  Nothing beats the flavor of home-grown vegetables and herbs and many things should be planted now!  This year, we are proud to carry some heirloom tomato seed mixes and some beautiful annuals that can be sown into directly into early spring soil.”
