All About Pruning
Saturday, April 17th, 10 am
This session is led by Jim, our pruning expert. He leads a group of twenty participants around the nursery grounds for a show and tell explanation of proper pruning. Jim focuses his discussion on the form and function of the plants – how to achieve the desired effect of your landscape planting without being a slave to the shears. Individual plant groups will be addressed: Roses, perennials, clematis and yes Hydrangeas. Please sign up in advance at jim@stoningtongardens.com or call 860-536-7720. All About Fertilizing

The plants are in and looking great, lawns are growing, why do I fertilize now? It’s all about balance, we’ll explain the benefits of regular feeding, soil testing and the how and why of the famous 4 step lawn fertilization program. Composting and fertilizer types will be discussed. Each participant will receive a soil test kit that will help you determine what type of fertilizer is needed in your garden. All About Organics: Fertilizer and Pest Control

Building on last weeks’ fertilizer overview is a concentration on organics. The question what does organic really mean will attempt to be answered. Our approach to organic pest control and fertilization is a compilation of methods learned by more than thirty years of practice and real world experience. Learn what works for us in the landscape as well as the garden center. Your experiences and methods will help us learn as well. Our favorite pest control product, Pharm Solutions will be on sale on the day of the seminar only! There is no charge and no pre-registration required, just come and share with us the wonderful world of organics and save on some great products.

Container Design

It’s planting time! Nancy and Lauren read and research all winter to find the best new plants and the most exiting planting combinations for your containers and gardens. Join them for a brief overview of what goes into selecting new plants and then work with us in creating your own masterpiece. Cost is $5.00 per participant plus the cost of plants and pot. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own container.

All About Square-Foot Gardening

Walk with Nancy as she proudly demonstrates the ingenious method of “Square-foot gardening” to maximize yield from a relatively small space. It’s a great way to get started in veggie gardening and offers a new perspective for those whom gardening has become drudgery. All About Companion Planting

This is the first in a range of topics that relate to our first love – landscape design. The most beautiful plants in the world can be lost if they become hidden by overgrown foliage or planted near overly aggressive neighbors. This hands- on class helps you create small gardens or containers that extend interest from season into season. We’ll mix annuals and perennials, grasses and herbs or any other combinations you can think of and create a long lasting, interesting planting scheme. The cost is $5.00. All About Proper Planting Techniques

Everything is set, ready to go in the ground but wait! How big a hole do I really have to dig? Join Jim as he goes step by step through proper planting of a B&B tree, container shrub and those small bedding plants.
